Religion can make people think that they have a purpose, and that they are fulfilling that purpose by acting in a way their chosen deity approves of.

• Some try pleasure

Many people pursue pleasure as a means to fulfil their purpose. They figure that the meaning of life is to enjoy every moment to its fullest and gather up as many objects and people around them that can generate that joy. But ultimately, this way of thinking can lead to selfishness. After all, if you are continually seeking after your own satisfaction, at some point that satisfaction will come at the expense of someone else’s happiness.

• Some try love

But some have figured out that the meaning of life is helping others and living a generally selfless life. By helping other people, we come to the realization that we are all connected in some way. By living selflessly, we are actually helping ourselves because of our connection to the people we are helping. Giving of our time, resources, and knowledge is the best way to better the world and better ourselves—because selfishness doesn’t profit anyone.

So my conclusion is that the meaning of life is to live a life of love and sacrifice. This is the true sense of purpose and will ultimately benefit the person who has come to this conclusion. Pleasure is short-lived and will not bring ultimate satisfaction to our lives. Religion will also not do anything unless it is rooted in sacrificial love and the care of putting others before ourselves.
